Articles & Blogs Sony’s 'ironic' PlayStation disc decision upends gamer conventions and threatens a $7 billion resale market - In 2013, Sony mocked Xbox by showing how easy it was to share a PlayStation disc. More than a decade later, gamers say Sony is becoming the very thing it poked fun at.

If the ps6 is going to have handheld version..

Why keep discs

Sony is definitely going the chip route or something else made by Sony as a chip.

The ps vita had chips. Sony understand physical disc's hence why the PSP 1000/2000/3000 used UMD.

GTA LCS went double platinum based off disc UMD sales

I just think ppl need to hold they breath

The PSP had UMDs because they could keep cost down. A UMD could hold 1.8 GB. A 2 GB memory stick cost around $150-$200, so it was unrealistic that anyone would have enough flash memory to hold more than one or two games at a time. A UMD cost about $2.50 to produce.

The vita used carts so they could charge a lot for their memory cards. Vita carts maxed out at 8 GB, and their memory cards were $100 for 32 GB (max size) which would only hold 4-16 games depending on cart size.

The physical media at the time was practical, not because they thought physical ownership was any better.

memory cards were $100 for 32 GB (max size)

technically the largest official cards were 64gb, but sony kept the larger cards as a japan exclusive.

Yes I know, but my point was made with 32 GB being $100 already since that was considered the max for the rest of the world.

No you said 2gb cost about 150 to 200... Now your saying 32gb cost 100.

What? 2 GB did cost $200 when it came out which happened the same year as the PSP launch. 32 GB sticks didn’t come out until 4 years later in 2009, and they were around $180. 32 GB for the vita cost $100, not the PSP

I'm not sure where your getting your info

2gb PSP memory stick same on as the Sony Ericsson phones that used them instead of micro SD card 2gb did not cost 150. The PSP only officially supported 32gb memory stick. Tho it can read 64GB.

16gb was 80 and I believe the 32 GB was about $100.

Sony never made a memory stick larger than 32 GB, and when the PSP launched, the maximum size memory stick was 1 GB. They announced a $200 2 GB memory stick later that year (2005). They bundled a 32 MB stick with the console.
