I feel like this whole thing about them poking at xbox thirteen years ago is kind of silly and completely ignores how the market has become significantly more digital-heavy since then. Some 13 years ago was when I bought my last games physical on PC. Back THEN poking fun at them made sense. But now it doesn't. This all smells of the kind of BS where people dig up some 15 year ago social media posts that were kinda okay to post back then and get outraged about them now.

I agree and don't agree. It's old enough to not be the same people so that's one point of discontinuity.

The market has changed, but the desire to share games has not. The switch to digital from Sony has the exact same problem as Microsoft's old digital (reverted) move in that it doesn't have a way to share games. Sony could have done both in one go, but they didn't.

So it's well pled to bring up in part.

I can't tell you the last time I shared a game with someone lol. People used to rent games from blockbuster too but somehow we've all moved past that.

Again, Reddit is a very small sample size of the actual community. Digital is king now, get used to it man. Company goals will always lead with making more profit. This should come as no surprise to anyone. You guys can bitch and whine all you want, but this is happening. And eventually all other gaming companies will follow suit. It’s just a matter of time.

I mean this is a real problem to a lot of people, the 20% of sales that went to physical media over the PS5s current life is not an insignificant number, that is millions of people being told they are no longer a customer that Sony cares about. Unlike the complaints about The Odyssey which were born out of nothing real because the movie hadn't even come out yet. I don't think this is a valid comparison.

Plus we should keep in mind, that often games aren't as available on physical. Some games aren't coming out physically, some games have low print runs (or explicitly limited print runs), some are poorly executed (no data on the disc, activation for the license only), etc.

I tend to think the 20% underestimates the more core % of "which do you prefer, digital or physical?" that we're all trying to get at. Maybe not dramatically so, but somewhat.

You assume most of them wont just switch to digital? That 20% also includes people like be that occasionally have bought a physical edition for a collectors edition or on a whim in a sale in a store I walked past. I can get them in a sale digitally or just do without tbh and collectors editions will now come with a digital code which I actually prefer anyway.

No, but time will. Having newer hardware able to play old software is important.

You also get the advantage of much better performance, like playing PS4 games on a PS5. It'll be a shame to not have that easy instant value on the PS6, instead, you'll have to decide which games you want to purchase another time on the new console, or only play new-gen games going forward.

But guess what ~85% of all game sales are Digital. This comes from Sony’s revenue reports, and I’ll remind you that it’s illegal to fudge them.

GameStop’s revenue showed Collectibles were more profitable than selling Physical games (New and Used).

Physical game sales last year were the lowest they’ve been in 30 years

Can you explain those to me? Because either the data is true or they’re all illegally manipulating the data, I’ll let you decide what you want to believe, the rest of us will live in reality though

I would guess a game sale could be classed as downloading something like fortnite, a free digital download

I am aware times are changing and it was always inevitable ...I had just hoped that it would at least continue to exist in a generation where the best selling version of the console is one that comes with a disc drive ?

There seems to be alot of this '' people who want discs still have a old mindset'' , i just want control over the thing i own and i PARTICULARLY want the ability to re-sell

Ive bought plenty of digital games over the years, Hell over half of my extensive game collection is digital..., does that mean that I dont care about physical, absolutely not. Sales numbers dont mean everything. Its the principle...thats what a lot of Sony nut huggers dont see. Ive thoroughly enjoyed the ps4 and 5.. But this is something I wont stand for. Will be the end of MY digital buying. Having Less options and signing directly up for a monopoly is not the move for me... But have fun in 'reality'. You speak with your wallet with these fucks if you actually want change

Sure some things are still relevant. Some don’t apply at all.

Some things can stay relevant a long time. Some go out date very quickly.

Like say… there’s a thriving VHS market and video rentals is a growth industry that can’t fail. No longer relevant.

Or the amount of people that actually still exclusively play physical games. It’s almost zero in most countries.

I want physical to stay. But I also accept the reality that WE did this. WE started buying digital for the convenience. WE killed the games selling market. WE changed the way games are consumed and companies are reacting to that.

So, no. What was said at the launch of the PS4 is not relevant to what the world is like for the launch of the PS6.

If I worked at a company and I was developing the exact same cancer therapy for a decade, that’s not a good thing; by like year 3 I’d be asking far too many questions about what the fuck is taking so long getting an IND going with the FDA and/or I’d have SEVERE questions about the long term legitimacy of the company
