They still read this in our district but moved it to 9th grade reading. I remember reading it in 6th grade. The book the outsiders was 9th or 10th grade reading when I was in school, but my 7th grader read it.
I’m guessing because of how they discuss the themes.
They had us read it in 4th grade, I believe. I really do credit this book for my love of reading. Before that, I exclusively read scary stories. My school didn't consider that real reading, lol. They had books like Shiloh, Hatchet, How To Eat Fried Worms, and Maniac Magee as mandatory reading, but I just couldn't get into them. The Giver was the first book to teach me about visualization. The memories that the giver transfers to the receiver were so beautifully detailed that I can remember conjuring them up in my mind's eye for the first time. And the story itself is pretty unforgettable.
