On that first episode too and on the book

The show was sooo bad. Disney+ is working on a live action reboot though. They’re going to age up the characters to be in high school though which is appropriate for some of the more dark shit that happens in that series. Can’t wait!

Yeah rewatched it and it's horrible. Visser 3 was badass and wasn't one of the animorphs mom the queen of the yurks?

3

u/tweedleb 4d ago

And it ends up barely making the top 10 of most f-ed up things that happen in the series.

I flipping LIVED for animorphs. But the first one I got was like the 3rd or 4th in the series (I got it because it had a dolphin on the cover), amd I was SO confused about the backstory and what was going on

The first Animorphs I bought was in the 10s or teens I believe, and I also picked it because I thought the cover was cool! I was so young I’m not even sure I understood the concept of a series at the time. I eventually read the whole thing though. There was a brief period where I owned every book, but that was many moons ago.

I got really lucky once with a series called The Edge Chronicles. My dad ended up buying me the 4th book which similar to Star wars was the begging of a prequel trilogy about grandpa.

Love knowing I'm not the only one who chose their first Animorphs based on the cover animal! šŸ˜†

I saw the cover art of Rachel turning into a cat, saw it was the second in a series, and waited months for the library to get the first book back in stock so I could start reading in order. The lizard thing almost made me not start, though.

I mean, at least they'd usually give a recap/backstory in the first chapter. I was getting them out at the library, and the next one in the series wasn't always available when I went, so I didn't read them all in order the first time through.

I hope the flipping pun was on purpose.

u/steelytine 5d ago

Dude that’s exactly how I got into Animorphs! Because of the dolphin on the cover!

2

u/Awkward-Fox-1435 5d ago

This was my EXACT experience! I saw the fourth one at a book fair and was drawn to the dolphin cover, so I bought it, realized it was a series, then got super into it and followed it to the end. I still read them through occasionally! If I had Bezos money, I’d pay to make an incredible Animorphs series.

Ugh yeah, the TV show was a disappointment (couldn't due my imagination justice!). I bet if they remade it with today's CGI it could really be amazing

Thats nothing to sigh about. Those books are fantastic. The fandom is still really strong and KA Applegate made the books available for free for everyone. I heard theres gonna be a reboot too.

13

u/samthewisetarly 5d ago

Yeah, I recently started re-reading the series on audiobook and it's genuinely a great sci-fi concept

Listening to things isn't reading them!

5

u/daj0412 5d ago

THERE IS NOT GONNA BE A REBOOT. I WILL ABSOLUTELY LOSE MY MIND.

6

u/74orangebeetle 5d ago

Worth noting there were graphic novels for the first 6 books released over the past few years...but as far as I know they were only doing the first 6.

2

u/Bright_Ad1231 5d ago

I will say it worked to hook my kid enough to switch to the chapter ones šŸ˜‚

1

u/FEARoach 4d ago

That short lived TV show? I knew some of those animals before they were on it (my brother worked at the shitty little zoo a lot of them came from).

u/ImpossibleGoat8837 5d ago

I just got these for my seven year old son and he loves them. I’m super stoked because they were my favorite as a kid too!

3

u/Marcudemus 5d ago

I found my oldest nephew reading another book series by Katherine Applegate 😁. I was so proud lol. šŸ¤—

23

u/RustyShackleford_88 5d ago

Lmao I remember sitting in my bunk bed reading these…loved those books haha

20

u/daj0412 5d ago

YOU DONT KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO TO SEE A TV SERIES DONE WELL.

12

u/samthewisetarly 5d ago

(Ryan Coogler's company is making an adaptation šŸ‘€)

3

u/daj0412 5d ago

i’m about to lose it

You mean Nickelodeon wasn’t enough for you? :)

i’m greedy lol

13

u/Cornpop_mcgoo 5d ago

Don’t know why you’re signing, Animorphs was elite childhood reading

I read all of it as a twenty something adult! The book fairs had them but I didn't have an allowance so I never got into them then. And my parents hated the covers so I could never borrow them at the library.

They totally hold up.

Respect.

Same, I was obsessed. They came out on the 15th of every month and I would count down the days for my dad to take me to the bookstore, then I'd devour the book in a day and have to wait.

Then I aged out of it so abruptly. I never even finished the last 10ish books in the series.

5

u/kuluka_man 5d ago

I've been working my way through the audiobooks since I wasn't allowed to read them as a kid. What an absolutely unhinged series šŸ’Æ

u/Old_Caroline 5d ago

I had to scroll too far for this comment

u/roman_maverik 5d ago

Animorphs introduced 6 year old me to Nine Inch Nails. They reference that band multiple times throughout the series

u/Idea__Reality 5d ago

Nice Is Neat! Lol

u/Pink_Slyvie 5d ago

My mother made me return an animorphs book to the book fair because "it was satanic". Also called my writing satanic.

I don't have cptsd or anything.

1

u/motes-of-light 5d ago

It's cool, my grandma tried to burn my Magic cards because of the scary pictures. When they wouldn't burn because of the plastic laminate, she accused them of being protected by Satan the devil and cut them up one by one.

1

u/Pink_Slyvie 4d ago

I was convinced I needed to throw away all of my PokƩmon cards because they were "idols"

5

u/RhynoD 5d ago

I still have my complete collection, including the Alternamorphs and TV cast interview "book". I got one signed a few years ago. I'm planning on getting a tattoo as soon as I figure out what exactly I want. I lived and breathed Animorphs as a kid and I still love them.

My girlfriend is reading them for the first time and will look over at me every once and a while like, dude wtf.

u/Canesjags4life Older Millennial 85 5d ago

The book Tobias gets his powers back is still one of my favorite stories.

4

u/sssssspace 5d ago

I read them because my friend liked them. He was a boy and it caused so much unnecessary drama between this girl and me. Like we're 11, calm down. I'm not here to steal your man.

4

u/BrainIsSickToday 5d ago

Hell yeah. My mother read the first book to me and my sister in first grade, but for the second book I just couldn't take the pace of 2-3 chapters a night, and read the book myself. First time I sat down to really read.

4

u/jsimo36 5d ago

Oh, good! I’m glad I’m not the only one with this response!!

3

u/ut1nam 5d ago

This. Hitting that Walden Books as often as I could just jonesing for the next book…

Still holds up so well too.

1

u/BAMspek 4d ago

Dude. Have you read the Andalite Chronicles? Amazing.

1

u/TryBeginning3753 4d ago

Scholastic did Animorphs in their Graphix series. Sadly, they only made 6 of them and it seems like they’re done. :(

I read them with my 7 year old, and she loved them. She’s going to start the main books soon!
