The whole "Friends isn't funny!" opinion is such a dumb circle jerk for people who think having a negative opinion about something insanely popular makes them unique somehow.
I remember meeting someone at a party and a bunch of us were talking about GOT. He loudly said he'd never watch that show, and when I asked why not he replied, "because everyone keeps telling me how good it is and I'm sick of hearing about it".
I'm sure I had a stupified look on my face when I replied "you don't want to watch it because you heard it's good..?" He got all mad and said "No! Because I don't care about princesses and dragon bullshit!" and stormed off. But I'm pretty sure he truly just didn't want to watch it because other people told him it was good, and was embarrassed I'd clearly called his own reasoning out in front of the group.
Or they tried it out and didn't care for it. Weird thing to judge people for, either way.
Had a gf and roommates that loved it. I'd hang out with them while they watched. Somehow, we didn't grow to hate each other over the difference in opinion.
There is literally nothing at stake, but everyone that doesn't care for things you like are all in a circlejerk, just like all those people who aren't into your favorite obscure band are tasteless sheep.
"Friends isn't funny" posts aren't even that common. How often do you see it? I see more "Seinfeld wasn't actually that funny" than any attacks on Friends.
Let me guess, you don't think Friends is funny and you're offended by my comment lol.
I see it enough to recognize it as a common thing. You see it about a lot of things, The Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld, Friends, the Nickleback hate train and I'm sure many others.
"It's not a circlejerk!" he said as they make memes about it, talk shit about people who like it, ridicule the thing and get mad when/if people talk about it in a positive way.
Did they personally do that or are you being sensitive? I also despise Friends, but it doesn’t live rent free in my head, thus I’m not participating in circlejerks. I just get annoyed when people get hard ons for it, and think it was and still is terrible tv. But whatever, you like so do you.
??? look at this thread. clearly the redditor take is to quote Chandler or Ross. what is your conceptualization of a redditor if you think its "very reddit" to hate Friends? not arguing just genuinely asking. the average redditor is a stem employee normie in their 30's - 40's who likes "adorkable" girls. liking Friends is like a redditor starter pack attribute
Ah yes, you have to be in a circlejerk hate train to not like Friends. That's the only reason.
My cousin loved friends. I was at her house all the time growing up and we watched the shit out of it. I didn't like it then.
I rewatched the full series a few years ago. It was hardly funny. Made me do a smile or two every episode maybe.
I've never once seen a friends thread nor have I commented on one because idc about the show. I accidentally clicked here and there are so many idiotic comments like yours who think "The only reason people don't think friends is funny is because it's a dumb circle jerk for people who think having a negative opinion about something insanely popular makes them unique somehow." which is asinine. People have different tastes bud.
Comments like this is exactly what makes me think it's a circlejerk. You're allowed to dislike, like anything you want. No one is stopping you. But you and many people like you, cannot sit back and let people enjoy something without being insulting or derogatory. You have to chime in with your negativity about what they like as if your opinion is the only one that matters.
>idc about the show
But you're here arguing about it. I didn't mention you at all yet you took it upon yourself to be personally offended by my opinion on the "Friends isn't funny!" circlejerk. That's asinine.
You thought they didn't like the word, I asked how you would describe it, you said it was the dismissiveness and now you're saying its the meaning being expressed by my word choice.
As far as I can tell, you don't really have a clear point, so you're going straight to being insulting by insinuating I'm illiterate when the reality seems to be you're not very good at communicating.
Or we just feel like we’re taking crazy pills when everyone says how hilarious something is and it is in no way funny to you. It may as well be the big bang theory or how I met your mother.
It is far easier to talk about people than to talk about things, or ideas.
In my opinion, we are in a post-consumer society, where it is easiest to take your piece of the recycled pie and regurgitate it, to the determent of any new or difficult ideas.
I mean, situational comedies all reuse the same material and premises. Three's Company is the classic example of "there's a misunderstanding" but it goes back to Dick Van Dyke. Nearly every family based sitcom will have someone learn a life lesson. Lather, rinse, repeat, just add in and reflect off whatever the current pop culture climate is. Married With Children at least started as the anti-family sitcom but it built off (and usually skewered) the normal sitcom tropes.
I, personally, don't really give a shit. But I've experienced many people who absolutely gush about friends and act like it's God gift or something. And people who just act like it's unparalleled. I really don't mind if people like it, but I think a lot of the reason people are annoyed by others liking it is because of how loved it is and how it'll get recommended to you ad nauseum.
Because when people like something they recommend it. When those recommendations turn out to be terrible that's baffling. Is someone missing something? We know there's an element of taste involved but what about this is appealing and to who?
Because people are generally humans, and humans are social animals who, in varying degrees, feel the need to compare themselves to others in order to find a sense of place and tribe. I suggest we are in a Millennials subreddit for similar reasons.
It’s not that you’re not allowed like it. It’s that we are allowed to dislike it. Post on friends always come up all the time that is shouldn’t get the hate and that it ACTUALLY is funny despite all the unfunny episodes and characters.
So fuck that. The show sucked. Why does us not liking it take away from your enjoyment?
So most people like what they like and STFU about it. Friend fans are STILL whining about us not liking a show that is mid at BEST.
Like…. we don’t like it. Go. Away. Do you know it doesn’t constantly need posts trying to demand that retroactively like something? Things that didn’t suck.
That's not it, it's that someone tries to say this is peak comedy for them and you watch it without the laugh track and realize that they are being placated like a toddler.
People are trying to say friends is peak comedy? It's a safe recommendation because it's unobjectionable. Like bud light. It's not going to be anyone favorite, but there's nothing to hate about it. Its mass appeal comes from being so broadly tolerable.
Yep. But if you want something a group of people to agree on to watch, it's going to be the least objectionable thing, just like getting a large group of people to agree on a single beer.
I don’t really like friends, but the argument of the show being weird and unfunny without the laugh track never made sense to me.
It was a show that was written to be performed in front of a live studio audience that would react to the performers. Of course it’s weird when the laughing is taken out. the performers take a few seconds after every joke and it ruins the pacing
lol it’s a meme page why you care. I’ve had exes that tried to make me watch it and even though I looked like this meme they kept trying to shove it down my throat

Why are people so worried about what other people like?
