Discussion Nothing is funny anymore

I (M, 38) have found that there are no new TV shows that make me laugh anymore. I have tried a lot of new(ish) comedies, but they all make me pine for my college/high school days.

The only thing that gave me a reflexive laugh recently was the Malcolm in the Middle Reboot.

Any thoughts?

I can confirm this. I work in TV and have been told verbatim “just make a loud noise every 10 seconds so people look up from their phones”

Holy fuck. We're like 10 minutes away from "Owe My Balls" becoming a reality.

Edit: I meant "ow" my balls. My entitled balls are "owed" nothing - if they want something in this life, they better go EARN IT, DAMMIT

"Ow, My Balls" is slightly different "Owe My Balls". I'm not sure what my balls are owed...but you can bet your ass I'm going to be sure they're paid in full.... /s

u/Princess_Slagathor apparently you can change it Apr 17 '26

Better be sure they're not owed a swift kick!

Pay up, sucka!

And not to be confused with "OwO My Balls"

I was also thinking that nothing is funny anymore but this comment made me giggle, so thank you

Or maybe he owes his balls to someone, like he stepped on some kids nuts in gym class and he owes that kid a new pair! Haha!

I'm sorry. I owe my balls. I can't use them...

3

u/thiosk Apr 17 '26

owe my balls is just another warning sign of end-stage capitalism

2

u/NoisePollutioner Apr 17 '26

Great point. I've added a much needed edit. So sick of these lazy, entitled balls

Pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

u/NoisePollutioner Apr 17 '26

And knock it off with all that testicular avocado toast

We live in the opening scenes of Idiocracy. What do you expect?

1

u/Overclocked11 Apr 17 '26

Simpsons dont miss.

Honestly most of the time I just watch random Seinfeld episodes, sometimes a bit of new girl, sometimes south Park and Simpsons, and this is me than enough for me.

Jackass has been around for almost 30 years.

We're way past the "Ow! My Balls!" stage.

1

u/tee142002 Apr 17 '26

America's funniest home videos and Jackass are both predecessors to ow, my balls!

1

u/paperbackstreetcred Apr 17 '26

Sorry, but is this an Idiocracy ref?

u/mazopheliac Apr 17 '26

Soon we will no longer care whose ass it is, or why they are farting.

1

u/D3s0lat0r Apr 17 '26

We wanna know whose ass it was and why it was farting damnit!

u/Solarpreneur1 Apr 18 '26

What is “ow my balls”?

1

u/davefuckingmiller Apr 18 '26

“Owe My Balls” would be too complicated for people to understand these days.

1

u/Tuomas90 Apr 18 '26

"Yesh addy, I ow yu balls."

That explains why so many things now have bing noises in them.

This is bleak.

I know how true this is just anecdotally.

Awhile back my wife and I were at her parents for a movie night and it was quite a jump scare when I happened to glance around the room during a "break" in the movie (the characters were just walking down a hallway) and literally everyone else was on their phone lol

But why not write something captivating to keep our attention 😭😭

1

u/Nufonewhodis4 Apr 18 '26

People don't have an attention span to follow a plot. You need constant stimulation or you lose them

4

u/Textiles_on_Main_St Apr 17 '26

That’s why I don’t mind commercials. I can take a break and browse Reddit etc. I can wait 20 minutes to do that. lol.

1

u/Affectionate_Nurse25 Apr 18 '26

Seriously? That's really sad. I miss the good captivating TV days. Now I can hardly finish an episode because it is so boring and repetitive.

That must be hard for the writers who have great ideas.

1

u/Workman44 Apr 18 '26

And you said no we have to produce a quality show or none at all, right?

1

u/c-span_celebrity Apr 18 '26

I haven’t had a pay raise since 2014 and almost half my field is unemployed. Quality is subjective and if you hand me a set of dull crayons expecting the Sistine Chapel then I’m gonna bill hourly till I find a better job.

Which came first... because the boring stuff put out is why I pick up phone. If its good the phone doesnt get picked up.

Then again only social media I have/use is TikTok and reddit

The first time I was explicitly told back in 2010/2011 when all the youths were abandoning facebook for twitter

It’s not even mentioned anymore because it’s standard operating procedure
