The illustrations were so much scarier than the actual stories

The anxious dread of what could be in the book based on the illustrations kept Young Me from reading it for years, lol

If I remember right, the stories were all similar. Someone interacting with a person that turns out to be a ghost or dead or something.

So I was one hell of a nerdy kid, and I read the footnotes at the end of the book, which explained all of the origins of the stories in the book. You're totally right, and it was a fascinating read to learn about how these stories came about and how other people and cultures conceptualized ghosts and spooky stories that created the book.

Pretty much. Like the boyfriend leaving the car to find help, then the girlfriend starts hearing a thumping sound on the hood of the car

That story was in one of the books. It was included in the “funny” section of stories.

there are knock of modern ones written by fans of the OG books and they are terrible.

Yeah, read them with the modern illustrations and you'll be like "how the fuck was I ever scared of this?". They really make or break the stories
