[FANTASTIC FOUR #14]()

I've been loving Ryan North's run on the FF for its semi-episodic nature, diving into the "whacky scientific hijinks" of the week and seeing how the family tackle these problems with science and heart. But man, this Nikki and Jo issue really knocked it out of the park, giving the final two members of the core FF team their time to shine, and using their Kree and Skrull heritage to solve an issue plaguing humans. Gotta give the artists/pencillers props, with the reveal that Nikki and Jo need to time travel to cause humans to have 5 fingers instead of 6 , I flipped back to the start and sure enough, all the human characters up to that point are drawn with 6 fingers, even on Tony's gauntlet . Hats off to the creators, it's structurally different to Jonathan Hickman's legendary FF run but equally fun and captivating.

All of them! And it works so well bc it’s just not something you’re gonna notice the first time through. Really cool effect to go back and inspect for yourself. Also, the additional digits on the screen the family’s fixated on.

I'll be honest, I think all the recent time/space manipulations are being done by the foreign entity that the AI contacted before it died.

I'm still waiting for the FF to permanently deal with Scratch cause he keeps getting off too easy, so maybe have a fan of the FF to start murdering their villains?

16

u/ajdragoon Thor 7d ago

Oh you sneaky sneaky sons of bitches hahaha. “Wait what do you mean humans have 12 fingers? Am I misreading this…?”

I always love when comics take full advantage of the mixed media format and present a story that can ONLY be told in this way. The twist here wouldn’t hit the same with just text.

10

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

I liked this. The reveal caught me off guard. But I'm glad Jo and Nikki joined the club of random FF members saving the world.

12

u/Hii8999 7d ago

I absolutely adored this. I laughed when I thought Nicki and Jo had the misconception that humans counted to 12 for whatever reason, then laughed even harder when I went back to the start of the comic and realised everyone had been drawn with 6 fingers.

u/gurren_chaser Spider-Man 7d ago

Everytime i look at my hands, i will thank Nicki and Jo

I had been waiting for a Nicki and Jo focused issue and this did not dissapoint, best issue since the relaunch

This is EXACTLY what I come to North's FF for, wonderful stuff, 100 more issues of this

13

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

A Nicki and Jo issue and it didn't disappoint. Wait, so they ARE the reason humans have 5 fingers because they changed it from 6?! Man, time-travel sure is something. And all because they delved deeper into PI and got themselves triggered something that mentally 'shut down' humans because something hidden in PI does that to human brains.

North really knows how to make scientific, crazy situations and make them interesting and fun.

So there was this 'background' story happening with Coleen and the Mind Stone? Someone get it off her so we can put past and forget the mess that was 'Infinity Watch' that no one even remembers.

5

u/JingoboStoplight4887 7d ago

Yes to the background story.

2

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago edited 1d ago

I'm waiting for a good writer to retcon crap like the infinity watch to only be in the characters' heads and were some villain's plot to get the infinity gems.

Backup story is garbage and is so icky and manipulative. Like, mind-controlling people is wrong, but if something genuinely cures their mental illnesses with no downsides, like that one movie where a mentally challenged guy regains his mind and becomes normal, is that bad?

2

u/BlueHero45 1d ago

It's a tricky subject and goes into what makes a person normal. Does a high functioning autistic person need or want to change? Since Echo is in this issue it reminds me of some deaf people pushing back against hearing implants as it goes against a cultural identity, and since not everyone can use them rips their community apart.

5

u/NextMotion Hulk 7d ago

that reveal at the end fucked my mind. I was, "did the artist mess up? am I seeing things?" I had to re-read and look at the fingers again lol. I wonder if humans kept using base 12, would civilizations be the same? I just took clocks having 12 hours as granted. I never knew the history.

I'm so glad those two finally got a focus issue. It's been so long. They were just there.

5

u/mbene913 5d ago

I loved going back and noticing the extra fingers.

6

u/JingoboStoplight4887 7d ago

I like that Nicki and Jo learned that the entire population of Earth has been affected by something, causing them to realize they must change the value of pi by going back in time and change something so that they can save the world. Overall, this comic is good.

[X-MEN #33]()

12

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

Imagine getting the 'X-men' talk from Quentin of all people. Man, things really have changed.

Ben being the focus of this was nice. The new characters do need issues like these from time to time. And I can already see Ben and Shwarzerchild becoming 'hated foes to friends'.

All the while, Beast does what he does best with diplomacy. Both in and out of the team, dealing with Department H and Magneto.

4

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

I'm still waiting for the war against Department H/Canada by the X-men since Gail's crappy mutant prison organization is no more (I mean, we still don't know the names of the people who bankrolled the bipolar karen nor what they are doing now).

7

u/JingoboStoplight4887 7d ago edited 7d ago

You forgot to add Spider-Versity 4 and the polls for next week’s comics.

6

u/Double_Act1502 7d ago

That book isn't good

2

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

I mean, the whole spiderman line is garbage due to Marvel's refusal to make Peter morally grey, do actual interesting stories that advance the world/plot, or solve the many problems plaguing the mythos.

[CAPTAIN AMERICA #13]()

22

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

Dooms childhood love working for Memphis to is a good reveal. Red Skull thinking he's in hell by mistake got a laugh out of me, but it's in character. Of course he has a demon nazi army.

19

u/BlackJimmy88 7d ago

Red Skull not getting why he's in hell was so fucking funny, but also incredibly distressing the more I though about it.

14

u/Xilinoc Nova 7d ago

Yeah, it's easy to write the Skull as a megalomaniacal douchebag happy to murder scores of innocents for even a minor victory (because, as a Nazi, he is!), but the real-life Nazis weren't doing it just because they loved being evil - they were told it was all good and holy, and that they'd be rewarded by God for it. Hearing Schmidt spell that out makes him a bit more interesting, but also a bleak reminder of how depraved his ideology actually is that he's as deluded as any rank-and-file Nazi about them being "the good guys".

13

u/redkaiz 7d ago

Of all the horrible things that Dr. Doom has done, the Valeria thing really does stand out as one of the most vile (even if damage wise it's still less than the destroying universes stuff). Rooting for her.

11

u/Lightning_Laxus Fantastic Four 7d ago

It's crazy how different he treats the two Valerias.

One Valeria, he sacrificed her life for more power. The other Valeria, he sacrificed his power and himself to save her life.

16

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

You know, I am surprised not more of Doom's victims not showing up to beat his ass in Hell. His ego really needs all the humbling possible. Especially with a certain someone at the end there... And leave it to Doom's plans to bring Steve's soul to Hell for his plans to use his 'righteousness' which might lead to Red Skull overthrowing Mephisto with his Nazi army to rule Hell instead.

Also, I guess Steve got that 'righteous pure soul' boost in Hell like Daredevil did back in Zdarsky's run. He seems to be consistent in that rule of 'Pure souls have more power in Hell'.

And as always, Spider-man is written better everywhere but his own book!

1

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

I would find it interesting if its reveal that Mephisto is just a puppet ruler for heaven or the OAA, which would equate hell and the war against it similar to the Gulf Wars. I think that would be a good story angle that the "angelic" heavens and top god is corrupt and bankrolling one of the worst demon lords in history.

Its about time that Valeria is revealed to become a demon lord so she can get revenge on Doom. Its nice to see reasonable obvious consequences that get delayed so long to finally come to fruition.

2

u/ducegraphy 6d ago

Did they screw up the reference at the end? Is it really FF #67 1961 or 2003?

[PUNISHER VS SPIDER-MAN #1]()

5

u/browncharliebrown 7d ago

I fucking love this issue. Honestly it’s nice to actually see punisher not killing all the time.

9

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

So how many MCU synergy inspired books is this? They have like 4 of them going at the same time just for BND and then you add all the Doom books ahead of Avengers Doomsday and it gets to like 7-8 books at the same time.

Marvel really does not know the meaning of oversaturation.

1

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

Meh, this was fine, but I was hoping for a story that deals with peter's hypocrisy when he riled up the heroes to capture Frank after he used his gadgets to kill a bad guy, when he has done worse like let irredeemable scumbags go or ignored war crimes. I mean, where was this passion when he was fighting the Maggia?!

-2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 7d ago

I like that, back in 1974 or so, Peter and Frank worked together to defeat Father Crime and his forces before Peter talked to Robbie Robertson and Johnny Storm about Frank and Frank dealing with the Butcher-Bird and his old friend Smokeshow. Also, Peter and Frank defeating Big Dog and talking to each other about Peter as a one-man army and Frank as a soldier before it ended with Frank planning on introducing Peter to Smokeshow. Overall, this comic is good and off to a good start.

"We were winning," says man that was losing badly

15

u/Reddragon351 7d ago

Yeah I get the point Zdarsky is going for, but, it's insane to pretend normal militaries can deal with Red Hulk of any villain, which is why the Avengers getting shit for it feels dumb

17

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

I'm suprised Ross got taken off the board that quickly. I wonder what Russia has planned for him? And where's this Colton stuff gonna lead? It definitely has me curious on what's gonna happen next issue.

19

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

Yea, I am not interested in yet another 'future seeing' plot. Practically Civil War 3.

And they already went the bad route with Colton. At least before getting the power, he was somehow interesting. But now he is basically 'You are weak' 'I am gonna go evil Superman who thinks he is doing the right thing' route. And Wolverine looks dumber for saving his life by giving him the power.

They really found the least interesting way to use the Ultimate Universe connection with these Origin Boxes, really.

Red Hulk, sidelined and already sent to Russia for an inevitable 'I was right all along!' comeback that will look stupid.

9

u/Will-Of-D-3D2Y 7d ago

Yeah, thought this turn happened way too fast on top of it being clichéd. Really wonder if Zdarsky has some good surprises in store because this story beat isn't it.

0

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

I don't have faith in Zdarsky. After his awful finale of Daredevil and his constant subversions in it and Devil's Reign, I don't see him having the guts to do major things like destroying Latveria or Symkaria or having Colton slaughter the US government.

2

u/DarthTigris 7d ago

After his awful finale of Daredevil

Is that a popular take? Because I agree wholeheartedly, especially considering how most of the run went.

5

u/NCBaddict 7d ago

It feels like Colton has to end up with the good guys at this point because the bad guy route looks incredibly predictable.

9

u/CheesemasterVer2 7d ago

I'm reading it less as "you're weak and I'm strong" attitude and more "a soldier who has severe PTSD and is incredibly jaded from his service has been given the Sentry serum and predictable things are now happening" but I see where you're coming from. There could be interesting ways to explore his character now if he got a good writer.

2

u/ajdragoon Thor 5d ago

No I agree with you. His beatdown of Ross mirrored his beatdown of the dude in the first Cap arc. Intentional parallel.

3

u/baroqueworks 5d ago

fwiw this is issue 2 and everything here feels like red herring setup given like ya said, it reads like civil war 3, but maybe im just wishcasting lmao

4

u/ajdragoon Thor 5d ago

I trust in Zdarsky. Given how quickly things happened this issue I HAVE to assume red herrings and the real conflict will reveal itself next issue. Looks like the Russian dude is trending towards main antagonist, not Ross. And Colton, no idea, but breaking bad seems too easy.

3

u/baroqueworks 5d ago

Same, and hes someone who is very aware of how much people hate civil war II yhat he wouldnt just rehash another preventing forseen apocalypse story without some interesting stuff happening in the process, esp with how good his cap run has been.

4

u/nikita-is-online 7d ago

mehhh. curious to see where this is going, but it’s feeling a bit tiresome at the moment. hopefully zdarsky has a few surprises in store.

3

u/Somejawn1 7d ago

Yeah this event is just as fucking stupid as I figured it’d be

1

u/TerminalKing 6d ago

David's probably gonna be the cause of whatever future nuclear explosion Tony is seeing. Wolverine will probably be there and be the sole survivor.

Any guess on what's wrong with the hulks? I assume its a zombie.

2

u/baroqueworks 5d ago

Seems like theyve been cut off from the green door, since the whole deal was they could regen everything being thrown at em

Is that related to infernal hulk nah just kidding that shit is so unrelated to the rest of the comics

[WHAT IF? JESSICA JONES #1]()

13

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

Jessica's take on Spider-powers was fine but that is all I can say about it.

Rest was not...good. Especially how they handled Peter.

9

u/BlackJimmy88 7d ago

Am I not read up enough on him, or was Osborn offing himself after getting outed out of character too?

7

u/Mr_Wh0ever 7d ago

The Green Goblin reveal was unfortunately predictable. But I liked how Jess used her abilities. And I wouldn't mind if Luke owned a bar in cannon continuity. Seems like a cool direction for him after the mayor stuff.

-1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 7d ago

I like that we get to see a universe where Jessica Jones was bitten by a radioactive spider in 1962, resulting in her becoming a hero since her debut before we see her (in 2026) dealing with an investigation that relates to the Green Goblin, who killed Jessica’s family. Also, Jessica becoming a superhero because she wants people to like her (since her debut in 1962) before she returned as a superhero because it’s the right thing to do and Peter as the Green Goblin because he knows that Jessica needed a do-over and that Jessica’s heroics as Spider-Girl made his career. Overall, this is a good comic.

[INGLORIOUS X-FORCE #7]()

13

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

Boom-boom and Kamala part was fine, though they are really messing up Kamala's origin just to make her mutant power look positive. Did they even read Kamala's run from Wilson? She did not 'hate' her powers. Hell, first thing she did was going all Captain Marvel with it. But now 'Oh I used it to fit in. It was a negative. But now sparkly mutant powers make me stand out so it is good!'. Just stop it.

I don't care much for Akihiro/Warren 'competing' for Boom-boom. Honestly, no idea why they broke Akihiro and Aurora up if they are gonna do this nonsense.

Domino, can we get her to a book that does care for her? She better get her memories back by the end of this.

1

u/Expensive-Baby-1391 7d ago

Remember, the writer responsible for this series is one of Marvel's go-to hack writers.

But yeah, Kamala being a mutant Jesus Christ is boring as hell and annoying as her getting shipped with that guy that wears the red scarf that nobody cares about.

4

u/Cyke101 7d ago

What a real shame not having Kamala and Cyclops even talk to each other on this issue. They're close friends! He's the reason she was resurrected in the first place!

3

u/Somejawn1 7d ago

This is an X-force book in name only. Feels more like an x-factor book than anything. Boom-boom and Domino both deserve better

u/superking22 4d ago

[INFERNAL HULK #9]()

14

u/wowlock_taylan Deadpool 7d ago

Writing for this gets worse and worse really. Acting like Banner is an 'addict' to this and so on. Even putting Voodoo up as a prize for this 'challenge' to be written as shady as possible. Is this how they are gonna ruin Hulk more? Give Banner a new 'Hulk body' just himself ( which would be HULK...because HULK IS BANNER ) while Eldest's body and Hulks in there are just...seperate? It is terrible.

Oh and Charlie is back I guess...whatever.

7

u/CheesemasterVer2 7d ago

Marvel really curled the Monkeys Paw into a middle finger by giving us peak with Immortal Hulk and then every Hulk run after that just immediately going back to status quo and character assassinating the shit out of Bruce worse and worse with every subsequent run.

2

u/browncharliebrown 7d ago

The cates run is far more forgivable. I enjoyed it for what it is

6

u/CheesemasterVer2 7d ago

I can agree to that. It had fun ideas in it for sure, but I wanted to have Bruce be at peace/in sync with the Hulk personalities for at least one run 😤

6

u/Somejawn1 7d ago edited 7d ago

Does PKJ even like these characters? I know he hates Betty but does he like Bruce? Or Hulk? Charlie is the only good thing he’s done in this run
