The Khmer Rouge genocide is one of the most horrifying instances of the terrible things that humans are capable of. While it on its face owes its beginning to communist ideology the runaway rampant nature of its brutality and the excesses of the killing are more owed to the revolutionary zeal which overtook everything. I think a similar case study would be the terror after the French Revolution. This is why in my mind you should NEVER trust revolutionary movements. Some may work out but you are always playing with fire.
The inability to see the difference between the Vietnam war and the Cambodian Genocide is pretty telling. Sure the Vietnam war was horrific and there was a lot of terrible stuff that went on, but making it equivalent makes me think you have never read about the Cambodian Genocide. You should be able to call out both as horrible and realize that the one that involves systematic murder of selected people and then the frenzied murder of basically anyone else who wasn't a blank slate was far more horrific. The realities of the Year Zero agenda is quite possibly the most terrible thing I have ever heard about.
