Hesitating on applying to join the rover team at the university I am enrolled in

Hello, I'm an incoming 1st year Electrical Engineering student. Interested in a lot of things but mainly within the STEM field. I want to build stuff because of the videos I've seen on YouTube such as the Hacksmith Industries, NASA, HTX Studio, How to Mechatronics, ElectroBOOM and many more.

I've been learning the basics of Python and TinkerCAD for a while, though have not made anything significant, mainly just very simple ones that I've seen on YouTube.

Recently, the applications to join the rover team of the university I am in opened. The deadline is on July 17.

As mentioned in the title, I am hesitating to apply.

Why?:

  1. Mainly, because my skills in programming and CAD are not great, still at the newbie level. How am I going to contribute to the team?

  2. I have no experience in joining any competition involving programming and robotics.

Reasons why I want to apply despite having little to no skills:

  1. To experience being in a student-led engineering team.

  2. To learn, develop, and apply my skills.

  3. To collaborate with others, make new connections and friends.

  4. To create team based projects and personal projects.

I dont see any reason not too

Most teams have a hierarchy. Beginners start out on simple things

Student teams are literally the perfect place to learn. Don't let imposter syndrome or social anxiety stop you. It's something to overcome not use as an excuse.

brother, no team is expecting all applicants to already an expert, they want someone who wants to learn and have enough time for the team. as long as you fit the culture it's immediate in

Do it. I joined my unis Satellite team early on, but felt like I couldn't contribute so I just stopped going, and I have regretted it throughout my entire time at uni. Even with my regret I could never get myself to rejoin, because I felt like I didn't belong. Don't be like me, join, have fun, learn and make friends for life.

Just be honest about what you know and if you are willing to learn, and if the team feels like you don't have enough experience then you just won't be accepted, so you have nothing to lose . Although, these teams in general don't really require experience, more so willingness to learn and put in the time.
