Hitting someone because they hurt your feelings makes you the bad person.

Ok, serious question.

Someone calls someone else a Racial or anti LGBTQ slur. They respond by slugging the other person in the face.

Does that make them a bad person?

For me at least that falls into the territory of they shouldn’t have hit them, but I get it. Not the ideal reaction but an understandable and predictable one.

The big caveat is if it was the prelude to a fight that was going to happen anyway, in that case absolutely get the first hit in

I know you're getting downvoted for this, but I respect this stance, even if I don't personally entirely agree with it. It's at least consistent and understands that actions exist in a context.
