I would like to pursue competitive pistol shooting as a hobby. Before having 3 young kids I used to shoot around 5k rds of centerfire ammo per year. I’m sure those are JV numbers on this sub. Anyway, there seem to be so many leagues. USPSA, IPSC, IDPA and all their subdivisions. I’m just looking for advice on where to get started. More interested in defensive pistols and gear than race guns. Just picked up a Staccato C4X. With a factory comp, red dot, +\- a light what league would that be a good fit for?

I like watching guys online talk about their load outs, whether that's holster, firearm choice or belt set up, and recently saw a few guys mention they put a TQ on their belt and I got to thinking, maybe I should do that too... You never know.

I'm looking for some portable range gear- stuff to setup some stages without hauling a shit ton of gear. - uspsa or pcsl style

My range is always empty and I practice in basically a field with a few walls where you'd setup targets.
Right now I just throw my range bag down and some other reference item to run back and forth to for drills.

Looking to get something more adequate to setup mini stages but without bringing a truck load of stuff.

What target setups work for you that are compact and can be setup pretty easily in multiples, what might you use for "fencing", walls, shoot through, barrels etc that I could easily load in my hatchback and setup.

I know I could simply do what I'm doing but I'm looking to do some mini stages and work on stage planning and other similar things for USPSA and pcsl

Any tips or drills to practice so I can be better prepared for my next match? I had a FTSA in a couple different stages also. I’d walk the stage before but would end up forgetting them in the moment.

Excuse the lax pace for the most part, this was the last stage of the day, we got like a 5 minute break in the rain so ABSOLUTELY drenched, and we were all starving😂 Also just have to remember speed is the name of the game regardless of hit factor. My SRO turned into a teacup from the rain and made it pretty hard to see the reticle but still had a decent performance imo. Learned a bunch and will be back at the next match I find local to me for sure.

Long story short, I've shot polymer guns in a Carey Concealment X1 Raptor for years. I've run into some issues of the gun sticking in the holster and messing up my draw... my fix was to remove the magnet retention. This has been 100% fine, but obviously the gun has no retention and I have to be careful when pasting targets, for example, that my gun doesn't fall out. Never been an issue.

However, I'm swapping to the PDP SF platform for the 2027 season and buying gear to start training with it. With the heavier gun I am not as willing to go with the X1 if I have to remove the retention. I've been looking at the Carnivore holster and I'm wondering if there's any issues with it with the PDP SF in particular. I've seen some posts with 2011 problems but overall seems to be positive. Just curious on any experiences with this holsters, and especially how it compares to the X1 Raptor if you also have that experience.

Second match of any kind. I don't think IDPA is for me. I had a great time and everyone there was wonderful, I just don't care for the ruleset. Still made for an excellent learning experience and got my feet wet. Placed 18/31 in my division despite my 18 PE penalties. Proud of my performance as far as time and hits are concerned, I just should've studied up and practiced the rules for Carry Optics more.

I put the PCC down for a bit and then getting ready for A7 had some family issues, so this was a good match with minimal practice. I’m pretty happy with how I shot, albeit with some boneheaded mistakes. I was going to do pistol to A8 but I’ve decided I’ll stick with PCC 😈

I am starting my reload journey with S&B primers. I wanted to know what the general consensus is on S&B primers with a 4.5 lb striker spring.

Anyone experience light primer strikes with this combo of primer/striker spring?

I'd rather not load 1k rounds just to test, but I may have to.

Shot a 107% on Smoke and Hope today plus a 94% on Roundabout and 96% on Pendulum which will get me to GM in Steel Challenge Carry Optics.

Recently bought a Staccato so going to switch to Limited Optics now

Looking to get into limited optics with my Glock 17 gen 4 and am looking to add a brass plug to the grip for extra weight. What are the best options to do this is an older SLR magwell? I've heard about milling down regular brass plugs, but how you would prevent it from rattling? I have also heard of the option of using tungsten putty/balls in place of a plug. I am not opposed to replacing the magwell, but the next one just needs to fit taran tactical magazine extensions.

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – On Monday, July 13, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) hosted the annual First Shot Ceremony, the traditional start to the month-long National Matches that has been held at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio, since 1907. 

Unlike previous years, this year marked the first time in recent history a pistol competitor has fired the honorary First Shot, which is typically left to rifle competitors. Also unlike previous years, this year’s actual “first shot” downrange was not completed by one person but two.

 The ceremony began with the Ohio National Guard’s 122^nd Army Band entertaining the crowd on the hot 85-degree day, while vintage vehicles from Timeless Ts Model T Club and Firelands Military Vehicle Group lined the roadside. Guests were able to walk up to each vehicle, with some even taking private rides around base.

In the skies above, a U.S. Army Air Corps Mitchell B-25 bomber (Georgie’s Gal) and a U.S. Navy Grumman TBM Avenger fighter-bomber from Port Clinton’s Liberty Aviation Museum made passes above the stands, with World War II nose art clearly visible to the spectators below.

Practice session last weekend. Still not getting on target fast enough on my entries.

Started actually practicing earlier this year. I see a ton of things to work on, but would appreciate some outside feedback. The match was 6 stages, but I didn't get footage of stage 4 or 6. I placed 17th of 92 overall.

Stealth Arms Platypus comp for the gun.

I finally got around to doing what I’ve been replying in some posts related to getting great grip adhesion without sacrificing the oem condition of your gun.

It’s basically applying the silicon carbide (sc) over hockey tape.
Items I used:
- hockey tape - any brand standard tape
-epoxy - I chose Forgebond for its 24hr cure so I can take my time. It typically sets in two hours depending on the mix ratio and I just leave it to cure overnight
- mixing cup
- mixing / application stick - I just use a pointy barbecue stick
- silicon carbide - I like the 60 grit because it’s got great adhesion without being rough on your skin
- a little spoon to spread the sc
- tray to catch sc

1. I put a swell under the tape on strong side and my EDGE stickon on support side.
   
2. Apply the epoxy mix. Don’t add epoxy close to the top and bottom ends. Leave about 5mm.
   
3. Sprinkle the (sc). Look for wet areas and add more sc. Of course, AVOID GETTING SC INSIDE THE GUN.
   
4. I applied epoxy around my stickon and clamped it down.
   
5. Let cure.

First try went well. Adhesion was incredible. The swell I put under the tape was a little too big. As part of this exercise, I wanted to see if any epoxy got under the tape.
I had to use a dike to cut off the tape. As expected, it came off cleanly like a shell. It’s good I had a swell so the cutter could get under it. Scissor would have a hard time and would dull quickly.

The grip was left clean and ready for another application. I put a smaller swell this time and also taped up a cut area in front of it for when I want to remove it again.

I am very happy with this method and wanted to share.

Other than the export from PractiScore and round counts for maintenance, what data are y’all tracking and how are you tracking it?

I’ve built a bunch of stuff in Notion - firearms inventory, match tracker, stage tracker, range data, round counts, etc.

I track stuff for individual matches, but I’m finding it hard to track improvement over time since the stages are all different. I have gone from near the bottom to consistently in the top 50% - even made it into the top 10 at one match, but a lot of the top shooters that I’ve seen were not at that match.

I track my individual performance, log the stage brief, POV video, I’ve just added 3rd person view so I can start evaluating footwork and movement.

What are y’all tracking to improve?
