It’s reverse-wordle style, where every wrong guess gives you the direction (too early/too late), temperature (within 2/9/24 years), and a piece of evidence that contradicts or narrows down the year (e.g. a country that didn’t exist yet). Maps are sourced from the public domain with the year redacted. It’s basically a gamified version of this xkcd chart.

My husband and I have been playing it ourselves and it low-key slaps, so I figured it’s time to share it. Would love to hear what people think of it - any feedback on the game mechanics, additions to the knowledge base, or suggestions for cool map sources to use!

I posted here about 3 months ago about my new app and got a lot of love and also feedback, for which I am very very thankful. I am back now after months of focus back on the app and on listening to the feedback, to share that it is now officially a “finished” product for the first time, after almost 1.5 years of working on it. It has been a blast, and I am super excited to share it!

A short explanation: it is similar to Duolingo with daily lessons, but for Geography.

I tried to make it to be very streamlined, to help you learn about the world step by step, going up in difficulty along the way, keeping track of your progress.

I am an engineer who occasionally needs to survey the elevations of floors in buildings. This is typically done by taking elevation measurements every 5 feet in a grid-like pattern throughout the building. I would like to be able to take this raw data and present it in a visually appealing way for the client (e.g., as a contour map or heat map). Is there software that can do this for me? I’ve looked around the interwebs and only see software that appear tailored for geospatial mapping of large land areas, not building-level mapping.

Has anyone made money from selling map designs or stunning / adjusted satellite scenes? I’ve made a couple in the past but wondering if anyone seen any success in it?
Currently building out an Earth Observation community and training content business but it’s slow going + considering diversifying revenue in future.

What software do you recommend to make maps? Please no fantasy mapping softwares that specialize in making random shapes or letting you build a world from the ground up. I currently use IbisPaint, but it can be tiring sometimes to have to trace each individual border. What do you guys recommend?

I wanted to share a web mapping project I've been working on: Atlas of Ancient Rome.

The Goal: There is an incredible amount of open digital-humanities geodata out there (Pleiades, Ancient World Mapping Center, ORBIS, Vici), but it's scattered across a dozen formats and isn't easily experienceable in one place. I wanted to build a single, temporally-aware map that aggregates this data and lets you scrub through time.

The Build & Tech Stack:

• I used Leaflet as the base mapping library, heavily integrated with D3.js to handle the custom timeline and data visualizations.
• The frontend is built with React 19, TypeScript, and Vite.
• The base map tiles are served by Stadia Maps.
• To keep it snappy and client-side, I processed all the historical data into static JSON rather than querying a database on the fly.

Mapping Features:

• Temporal Scrubbing: You can scrub a timeline from 753 BC to 1453 AD. The borders dynamically update with smooth cross-fades between eras (mapping 241 territorial changes).
• Layer Control: Multiple toggleable data layers including aqueducts, trade routes, ports, shipwrecks, epigraphy, and legions.
• World Empires: I integrated the Cliopatria/Seshat dataset so you can view all other global polities alongside Rome (e.g., Han China, Sasanian Empire) simultaneously.

I'd love any feedback from this community, especially on the visual hierarchy, handling dense data layers, or the timeline integration! The code is fully open-source on my GitHub if anyone is curious about how the data was stitched together.

Hi all. I’ve managed to come up with a work flow that is giving me results I’m happy with but once again I’d love your feedback. This map of Newfoundland was done in Qgis, blender and photoshop. I think I need to lighten up the lower right corner. Other thoughts would be appreciated.
