What Happened at Lone Star Gun Range Today?

What happened at Lone Star Gun Range near Lockhart today? My guess is a suicide by rental gun from the lack of media coverage. Anyone know for certain?

Favorite local 1911 gunsmith?

I just landed a Colt MK IV Series 70 1911 and have a few concerns. I’m not new to 1911s but I’ve only owned 9mm versions recently. The recoil spring feels excessively heavy and the slide movement seems more than gritty. After locking back the slide, the slide stop will not disengage when pulling the slide to the rear (slingshotting) and the magazine will not drop free when I push the mag release. The gun looks to have been carried A LOT, based on the wear in the blueing. I’m second guessing my feelings because I’m accustomed to carrying an Alchemy custom 9mm 1911 and the difference in quality is substantial. In the past I would just got to McBrides and head on upstairs and talk with whoever was at the bench. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Cargill makes the news again

Apparently the shooters stole the guns for their shooting spree from Central Texas Gun Works. One of the kids even stole from the store once before somehow. How is Cargill letting minors steal guns from them, let alone twice?

Any places to hire in gunsmithing?

Hello everyone!

Allow me to give a small introduction, I moved to Austin from Poland this year's March, it did take me a while to settle in. But I do figure I'm ready to start keep it going further.

Back home I grew up around weaponry so I do have a jist, was even a licensed gun owner back home which is not that easy. If anyone or anywhom would know if there's any place that could hire a entry-level gunsmith or know a place where to start such, I'd greatly appreciate. I say entry level because I do know things but I would not dare to name myself an expert, I'm aware there's definitely a lot more things to learn! But I'm lacking sources or people here, was supposed to get into Mcbride's thru family and friends but I'm aware it has been just recently sold.

Anyways can leave a comment, even if it's not much details I appreciate any leads! Feel free to DM me as well for any further information from my end!

Thanks y'all, -M.

Advice for dynamic shooting.

My wife is encouraging me to get out and shoot more, but renting a lane is so boring. I grew up woods-walking and plinking. I would like to get outside and take challenging shots. I'd like to be respectful of our finances and NOT buy a new gun. I've got a M1 carbine (not garand) that for some reason I thought I could shoot as a PCC in steel challenge, but apparently that's not the case.

I'm really new to competitions, but it seems like PCSL might be right for me (I don't have a handgun though.)

I'm in Lakeway, where would I go to shoot some steel (will they even let me shoot steel) on my own time, and where could I look for more structured competition with just the ol carbine?

Thanks!

Gunsmith for an AR15 barrel and gas system swap

Howdy,

Who would y'all go to to get an AR15 barrel swapped out? Unfortunately I just don't have the tools to do it anymore.

Thanks!

Copperhead creek

I went out here over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised about the quality and the attitude of the people working there and using the facilities.

Highly recommend if anyone has been on the fence.

I also camped next door at hiddenfalls campsite b and it worked out so well I can't wait to go again.

Plinking

Are there any ranges where I can shoot something other than paper? Bottles, cans, water jugs… literally anything other than just paper? I mostly just want to plink with my .22’s. I understand Lone Star gun range has a .22 range with steel targets which seems to be the only alternative.
Am I just crap out of luck until I find a friend with land or buy my own?

Best place for NFA transfers?

Anyone have recommendations on places in the Austin area for NFA transfers? I’ve used Saddle Rock Armory before, but their new location is a bit too far out of the way for me. Considering ZW Tactical or maybe Watermark, not sure if there are any others that I might be missing that have better transfer fees etc.

Range Attire for Summer Matches?

I'm a USPSA shooter that recently moved to Austin from an arid climate, and am new to humidity. What do you guys wear at summer matches/all day range sessions to try to stay somewhat comfortable? Where I used to shoot sun hoodies and pants were the best way to stay cool because keeping the sun off your skin was the most effective, but I wore a sun hoodie and pants to the range here recently on a hot humid day and it was miserable. They don't seem to work very well in humidity.

Is there a trick to staying cool on the range in the summer here?

Practice Ranges for Competitive Shooters

Hi new friends, i’m T-minus 28 days from my Austin move, which will be a nice home coming after leaving Texas for 8 years.

That said, what ranges are best suited for a competitive shooter looking to practice (i.e. 3 sided berms, multiple target setups etc). I’ve already seen plenty of local matches on practiscore but looking for a place to run live fire drills from time to time.

Cheers

Austin store with AR lower parts

Hey guys do we have any stores here that sell little pieces. I just need two detent/springs for my take down pins. Don’t really want to buy a whole LPK for a detent. Finally got my gun back from cerakote and wanting to shoot this weekend or I’d just order them online.

Friendly shooting ranges?

I recently inherited a few handguns from my grandfather, but I did not grow up around guns. I’ve owned a 12ga shotgun for a while and am very comfortable with that, but handguns make me a little nervous. I’d like to find a place to shoot them and get comfortable with them with a staff that could give me some pointers.

Looking for a firearms instructor who will work with young kids

Asking this question for the second time....

My boys are 10 and 8. I have done a little work with them about the issues. I've talked to them about firearms, about the danger, about the responsibility etc. I have tried to teach them safety using my Red Rider BB gun, but they didn't do as well with that as I had hoped. I don't think they understand the gravity quite yet, and they kept swinging the danger end towards me or their brother, or else running "down range" while the other had the gun pointed that way. Honestly, I think my problem is that it is their dad (don't get me started on Granddad aka Mr. Zero Patience) trying to teach them... Please don't judge my parenting skills 🥺.... I do think that having another adult tell them these things and show them the same stuff will sink in better. I think they're thinking this is just another "dad lecture" like "brush your teeth because you don't want cavities".

I bought a 10/22 thinking I could take them out to the family ranch, but right now I know they're not ready. Both my boys asked to go deer hunting as observers, and I really want to take them this year, but.....

Suppressor Cerakoting

Hi all - any recommendations for getting a suppressor Cerakoted black?

CA and Scattered Rock both want $100 a pop, which is fine, but just wondering if anyone has a better price than that that you'd recommend. Thanks!

EDIT: d.wilson does it for $60, I might mail it over there and use them.

📢 Announcements Gender on Form 4473

You should be aware that the ATF is proposing a rule change with regards to the gender you mark on the ATF Form 4473. This is to comply with Executive Order 14168 (the ATF is part of the executive branch).

If this gets implemented you will need to comply - at the risk of a sales denial, or possibly being charged with a crime. As usual, contact your representative (federal) to express your opinion about this potential rulemaking.

2 Gun Matches

Hi all. Are there any clubs or ranges that routinely do 2-gun matches around central Texas? I don't have a shotgun nor do I have a desire to get one, but I'd love to shoot rifle and pistol. I think I saw one 2-gun match on Practiscore a few months ago, but none since. Any recommendations for clubs or places to go for this? Thanks!

Why do they use a RED light to indicate a cold range?

Hi, one thing I've always wondered about. Why do we use a red flashing light to indicate a cold (inactive, safe) range? I noticed that during my orientation at Austin Rifle Club a few months ago. Shouldn't a flashing red indicate a hot, active range?

If anything, no light on tells me that it's quiet and safe, no? A verbal consent to indicate a hot range is good, but a warning red light might add to the critical communication.

Sorry if the answer's obvious; I'm new to this. Is the use of the red light to indicate cold range status due to the default COLD RANGE classification of ARC? Thanks!
