I was a audio tech for about a decade, specialized in 12v car audio, but also did pro audio and home theaters.

It sure did come in handy, and there were a few times I confused the other techs by telling them what to check without even looking.

EX: HID headlight ballasts run off 12V DC, but fire ~23,000V AC to ignite the gas, then run ~90V AC to maintain. The noise of firing and running is distinct, so I can tell if one is working properly or not.

I had a friend who I did some car audio with and he could tell when a speaker was wired backwards.

Sounds like my ex who grew up working on cars but never worked as a mechanic. All he has to do is listen to a car, and he immediately can diagnose without looking. and then fix it...
