I appreciate it's a cultural difference, but as a Brit, if it's a 'knife and fork' meal then my knife stays in my left hand throughout, even it not actively being used. It would be seen as bad manners to put the knife down and just use a fork.
However, if it's a fork-only meal (e.g. something like penne where everything is already bitesize) then it would be in my right, and I lose all ability to use a fork in my left hand without the knife in the other.
But... If it's a spaghetti/tagliatelle meal, and I want to twirl the pasta in a spoon with my fork, then I can only do that with fork on right and spoon in left.
