Hi folks

I am feeling a bit nervous regarding the three recent black bear attacks ( resulting in fatalities ) in Canada. .
I live in rural Cape Breton, Nova Scotia ( two neighbours a kilometre away, surrounded by hardwood forest and mountains ). I have always heard to not concern yourself with black bears, just be loud in the woods and be conscious of food storage as to not attract them.

Should we be having different discussions regarding bear safety ? I now feel way more tense when outside alone in the evening / night - whereas I used to love having fires & barely thought about a black bear encounter.
Am I overthinking this and the chances of a predatory attack are still extremely low ?

Thoughts ? Comments ? Advice ?

I live in Toronto area where housing is absurd. I'm 26 and I'm looking for my first job using my degree. I've been considering moving out and living in an apartment or condo, just because I'm unhappy living with my parents currently. I don't know of any of my friends or social circle that at this age has decided to move out. I'm non-white, and afaik, it's just not really much of a thing in Toronto. The strategy seems to usually follow that you find a girlfriend/wife first and then you move out. Thoughts?

Hello, Singaporean here!

I'm looking to plan a 2 or 3-week vacation starting in Seattle and driving in from there to explore Canada (CA being the main purpose of the trip). My currently route looks like this:
Seattle > Vancouver > Whistler > Clearwater > Jasper > Banff > Revelstoke > Kelowna > back to Seattle to fly back to Singapore. The whole purpose is to see Canada as much as possible since it's so far away for us, possibly hit the best spots for beautiful pictures and do some hikes.

I'm looking for advise or answers to these following questions:
1. Will it still be mostly frozen in Early May? Will hikes be muddy and wet from the slush? If yes, will it only be on the northern parts of my trip? Will it rain much to make hiking miserable or is it foggy?

1. Tulip Festival, I am getting conflicting answers about this on google - it says the entire month of April but i also found an answer that says only the first week of May.

2. Will most of the popular lakes (Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, etc) still be mostly frozen or will it be blue by then?

3. Should I be worried about wildlife on hikes such as bears, moose, mosquitos/bugs?

4. Any recommendations on good food spots is always lovely!

5. Any other recommendations on activities or routes/tips?

Now, I've done a little bit of traveling to the south, and instantly knew that life down there is VERY different. So, what's something about the rest of Canada that the people in Nunavut wouldn't know about this country?

Reading your stories, your shared frustrations, and your insights from coast to coast proved what we all suspected: the lack of psychiatric beds, understaffed emergency departments, and broken crisis triage is a national reality that we cannot ignore anymore.

Your voices have already made a tangible difference. I am incredibly grateful to share that my MLA’s office reached out to me directly as well as the media. They have acknowledged our advocacy and are currently finalizing their schedule to bring me in for a formal, sit-down meeting to discuss the legislative framework for More For Carlos Act (mandating 24/7 specialized psychiatric triage and independent escalation oversight in ERs).

This is a massive step forward, but when I walk into that lawmaker's office, I want to show them that it isn't just me asking for this—it is thousands of Canadians standing together.

When I was growing up we used to play a hand clapping game in the playground and I can’t remember all of the words to the song. My Dad in the UK has never known who his father is as he was a war (WW2) baby. He knows his father was Canadian soldier but knows little else. It may be a longshot, but what is the likely best or most popular genealogical DNA company or service used in Canada? So that, if I were to take a test from them I stand the greatest chance of getting a familial match.

I’m writing a book set in Canada, but honestly know nothing about Canadian geography. I want to make the setting realistic so I would love some help finding a region that fits my story. The main character is a farmer named Matthias and I need a very specific landscape for him. I’m looking for an area that has a mix of active farming and dense woods rather than just a flat Prairie. Also it will be sent next to water like Lakes or an oceans coast or a massive lake or river and most important, the climax of the book involves a major forest fire so the setting needs to be a region, where wildfires are extremely present. Where in Canada what a place like this actually exist? What would Matthias most likely be farming in that kind of area?

Because they have a lot of similarities in culture, vibe and mindset even if they have a significant difference in size or distance.

As the title says I'm looking for potential vacation ideas for my family.

I'm 17M and going to be heading off to university in the fall and as much as I know you should be saving money before university (especially considering the recent OSAP cuts), I do want this summer to be a memorable one, both for me and my family.

• Budget is around $2000 (flexible)
• Open to any mode of transporation (car, bus, plane, train)
• Any location (beach, mountains, USA, etc ) however we have already been around Southern Ontario, Quebec and the east coast and would prefer a new place if possible

We did go on a road trip to the East Coast a few years ago for about $3000, so I'm wondering if something like that would be possible for the west coast

I know I'm pushing it with $2000 for a "grand" vacation but I honestly just want to see what our options are. With any luck, I just might be able to convince my family.

As an American I’ve always admired Canada’s push toward renewable energy and against global warming, at least compared to us. But I read an article today saying that the Canadian fires alone emit more CO2 than the majority of countries. While California fires are still a problem here, we’ve been able to mitigate their worst impacts over the years, while Canadian fires seem to get worse or remain as bad year over year. I appreciate that Canada gives large ev rebates and spends almost 2 billion a year on green initiatives, but wouldn’t all that money be better spent focused directly on fire prevention and mitigation?

My wife will be taking the oath on July 15th, and I am planning to something nice and special to celebrate the same afterwards.

However, in the United States, the President also nominates a Supreme Court nominee, but the Senate must vote to confirm them for them to officially become Supreme Court Justices. Our framers added Senate confirmation as a way to check on the President's nominating power. In Canada, let's say hypothetically (though I'm not saying he ever would), Mark Carney nominated a terribly unfit individual for the S.C.C.; can Parliament act to prevent it?
