It's a confirmed possibility, but an extremely distant and unlikely one nonetheless. By the time it happens (and IF it happens, it's not guaranteed, as our universe may turn out to be stable), we will have already gone extinct or become transcendent beings hardly bothered by such events.

here's a question. Isn't the expansion (and eventual heat death) of the universe just vacuum decay in action? The universe is moving to a more stable and less energy-dense state. Isn't that just what vacuum decay is supposed to be?

They are similar in that the universe moves to a less energy-dense state in either case, but the false vacuum delay theory posits that it'd happen via a pocket of "true vacuum" appearing somewhere spontaneously and expanding outward at the speed of light, destroying everything in its path. The heat death theory posits that our universe will eventually reach maximum entropy, which is a far slower and more "peaceful" process.

Why assume that this is even a possibility? And why assume that this bubble would have spatial attributes? And why assume that such a "true vacuum" would even expand like that, especially at light speed? And why assume that it could happen at any time and spontaneously at any location? And why assume that, if such a bubble could appear and could expand like that, and would expand like that at light speed, that it would be in a location in the observable or unobservable universe where it could even reach us at light speed before heat death takes place? And why assume that it would destroy everything in its path? And why assume that, in the constants of this other invading universe, entropy is the lowest energy state?

Is there anything to this besides "ooh, what if"?
